Setting Up Drupal in 10 minutes - 5.7
This is a step by step setup guide for installing and setting up Drupal 5.7 in under 10 minutes. Now there is always something that comes up along the way that may take longer, but about 10 mintues is all it takes.
I put this together because the Drupal documentation assumes that you already know almost everything before you read it. If you are looking to setup a multisite version of Drupal check out my article: Installing a Multi-Site Drupal System. It allows you to run multiple sites on a sinlge code base of Drupal.
Virginia Proposal Seeks to Control Webusers
The Washington Post just ran an article that Virgina has a proposed law that would require sex offenders to register their email and IM screen names in an attempt to monitor and control their presence on social networking sites like MySpace.com
Digg your way to better SERP
About 1 year ago I bought the domain name theworldsgreatestguy.com as kind of an in-side SEO joke around our office at the start-up PrivaSign. I was trying to SEO our company site and once over beers joked that it would be funny to say to someone in a bar that according to Google I was the "world's greatest guy". Well for about 9 months that is exactly what Google said with very little SEO effort of my own. And then I happened to be in a bar having a few drinks with someone discussing VOIP, start-ups and SEO and mentioned my Google trick. But much to my disappointment Google moved me away to from their list. So off came the gloves.
CNN Business - new business trends on the internet
CNN Business recently ran a couple of stories regarding new business trends on the internet. While some of is not really 'new' to tech savy people, I do appreciate the fact that these forms of businesses are getting more main stream attention. Why? Because I believe that it is a very good thing for our economy that the internet allows more and more people to either supplement their income or find a more lucrative means of gaining income. Economics is the study of limited resources and after all time is the most limited of all resources. Giving people an alternative means to make additional revenue is fantastic as it will ultimately increase the economy as a whole. While some of these trends do require some technical know-how, this first article requires mostly the skill of a good researcher/writer as there are plenty of hosting services that would allow a beginner to create a basic site (and therefore a business) for less than $10 a month.
Extreme Futures - A vision of things to come
I just heard an interview on NPR with Dr. Canton the author of "The Extreme Future" and "Technofuture". I reaaly enjoyed the conversation and he really had some great observations on a wide variety of the world's greatest new technical subjects. He has a good website that talks about some of these points here is one of his lists.
Silly Silly Surveys - Hilton Hotels plays 20 million questions
I recently stayed at a Hilton Hotel. The stay was very nice with no major complaints (larger selection of cable channels would be nice). Service and people were very professional. And then I get this email asking for a feedback from my experience:
Traveling with technology - the smarter way to fly
Here are all of my favorite Mobile Websites .
I have been looking into a way to check flight status from my cell phone with a text message or SMS. I thought about Google since it already has a pretty good mobile search function. But after a few tests I realized that it would not give me the results I needed. Then I found a really cool tool for finding flight status on your cell phone. It's called 4INFO. I know that they provide mobile searches just like Google but what makes them better for flight status alerts is the fast, easy and simple search strings.
Installing a multi-site system on Drupal in less than 10 minutes
Someone had posted a comment on my Setting Up Drupal in 10 minutes. This is the response to that reader's questions.
Hi Isaac,
Great job with the install post! I can't wait for the Testing, Site Structure and Creating Content episodes. You had mentioned previously that you had setup two installs running a total of 10 sites. The multi-site funcionalty sounds amazing! Can you walk me through how you implemented those multi-func setups?
Dear reader,
I am glad to see that you liked the guide on installing Druapl and yes I really need to finish the rest of it soon.
AJAX powered search engine for finding source code
This is an amazing new AJAX powered search engine for finding snipets of code. It is very fast and extremely slick. I searched for drupal source code and on the right side of the browser it displays the layout of a traditional drupal installation. Click on the files and it displays their source! Well worth a look for every web-based design team. Beautiful and simple layout.
Letter from Krugal:
We're very close to the end of our beta program, and have only one more critical test before we go live. We'd like to verify we can handle the load that thousands of simultaneous active users will put on our system, and so avoid the dreaded "We got slashdotted" syndrome.
