GTD for the Audio Inclined
Okay fine, I will admit that I use my Blackberry while inside of a car and yes sometimes the car is also moving. Reading an address from an email, Looking at Google's mobile Maps or just plan making a phone call are all common tasks, but driving often gives me time to problem solve, think and plan out projects. But right when I have a good idea there is no easy way to capture the information for future actions.
So I set about trying to solve the problem of "how to manage task when you cannot write", and yes the solution came while stuck in traffic. Luckily I remember the idea long enough to write it down later (not while in a moving car). I also hope that this will assist people with disabilities that seek out task management solutions.
Well this problem would restrict me from using my hands but leaves me with speaking. I don't want to carry an adding device (like a recorder) and I already have a cell phone. Voicemail makes sense but I don't want to spam my own mailbox. I need a collection method, an inbox, context based 'folders' and finally a process for retrieving the information. I chose Google's Grand Central phone solution because its free, very easy to use, setting up multiple accounts gives me my 'folders' and it has a web based interface that is accessible from both a desktop and mobile device like my Blackberry Browser.
How to Upload Multiple Files to Google Documents
Posted September 30th, 2007 by isaacFirst you might wonder why I want to use Google Documents... its free, its available on any PC, I can share the files online and best of all I can SEARCH the contains of each file as a massive database or easy to use wiki (a wiki that's easy to learn and exports the files too). I use Google Documents to manage projects and research so it is available from any PC anywhere. It is becoming a large part of my productivity and GTD (Getting This Done) workflow.
Google serves different SERP to different computers
I have been trying to increase the rating of my new site The World's Greatest Guy on Google's SERP. I had been #1 on Google for the first 9 months of the sites's life and then it just went away. If was a huge disappointment... Google changed its mind. Yahoo and MSN both list the site as #1 for, of course "the world's greatest guy".
Why is Gmail not working? Broken labels, settings and more...
I really like using Gmail. I use it to manage all of my emails. I run all of my domain based emails through Gmail. Even if I send an email from a desktop client application it automatically BCC's to the primary Gmail account. This allows me to search all of my emails (sent and received) from one location.
Google's new Government Search Tool versus the FirstGov site
Google just released a Goverment specific search portal. This is basically a competitor to the government's own site FirstGov, which is powered by MSN but looks an awful lot like Google.
So let's run the paces on Google and FirstGov to see what we get. I tried searching for a rather obscure federal regulation 34 CFR 99.30. It is from the Department of Education and governs the practice and procedure of record keeping.
Google Notebook and why can't I do EVERYTHING in one place?
Google does have a great little notebook and it wants to share it with everyone.... along with its gmail, spreadsheets, maps, calendars and everything else. The problem, and personally its a huge problem is that while 'everyone' and do everything on Google no one person can do everything in one place.
Google Analytics loves the new Firefox browser sync tool
Google's blog just announced a new Firefox sync extension that "unifies your bookmarks, history, saved passwords, and persistent cookies across all the computers where you install it. It also remembers which tabs and windows you had open when you last closed any of your browsers and gives you a chance to reopen them."
"Persistent Cookies"... so Google has created a tool to make our lives easier while at the same time allowing any website with Google Analytics to track continued visitors. Now if a visitor was hitting a site at work and then made the purchase that evening when they got home, Google Analytics will track them. Not to mention that now your cookie is attached to a Google account ID so this gives Google additional ability to track users across multiple sites.
Google Trends is my new best friend for SEO
Google has just released a new service called Google Trends (I wonder how many hours it took for them to come up with that name). It is an amazing new search analysis tool that is perfect for targeted SEO.
Disappointingly it does not give a numerical value to the data, so you cannot assume the relationship between two different searches. However you can see the data from several search terms by seperating them with comas "term1, term2". Also note that you can isolate the trends to specific years, months or regions. The inital changes took quite some time to load but after the switch the results came very fast. As such I didn't waste time changing them much and left it set to "all years" and "USA" for this little test.
Spamming, I mean Marketing with Google's public CL2 calendars
Google CL2 calendar has great sharing features built right into the service. You can share one of your calendars with a selected person or the entire world. And on the flip side someone else can share their calendar with you. Clean a simple. Just click "manage calendars" and then "add calendar" and you can now search for whatever you want.
But these are trust built calendars, as I don't really know who created them so I trust that the events are the ones I want. But what if they aren't? Optimizing a spam page to rank top 10 out of 1,000s is tricky but not impossible. How difficult will it be if there are less then 20?
