GTD
Time Management, GTD and Life Hacking
Posted January 1st, 2008 by isaacAs a society we spend so much time and energy getting information into and from emails, notes, websites, lectures, chats, blogs and news feeds. But what is all of that worth if we forget what to do next (task management) or we can't find something we had previously found?
Content Management, Knowledge Management and Information Management are all becoming huge 'industry' buzz words but that means nothing if we fail to teach and provide solutions for the 'individual' user/employee. I went to school and received a B.S. in Management in Information Systems, but not one class discussed a micro-system for the user/student. Do any highschools, colleges or corporations seriously teach this critical problem solving issue?
GTD for the Audio Inclined
Okay fine, I will admit that I use my Blackberry while inside of a car and yes sometimes the car is also moving. Reading an address from an email, Looking at Google's mobile Maps or just plan making a phone call are all common tasks, but driving often gives me time to problem solve, think and plan out projects. But right when I have a good idea there is no easy way to capture the information for future actions.
So I set about trying to solve the problem of "how to manage task when you cannot write", and yes the solution came while stuck in traffic. Luckily I remember the idea long enough to write it down later (not while in a moving car). I also hope that this will assist people with disabilities that seek out task management solutions.
Well this problem would restrict me from using my hands but leaves me with speaking. I don't want to carry an adding device (like a recorder) and I already have a cell phone. Voicemail makes sense but I don't want to spam my own mailbox. I need a collection method, an inbox, context based 'folders' and finally a process for retrieving the information. I chose Google's Grand Central phone solution because its free, very easy to use, setting up multiple accounts gives me my 'folders' and it has a web based interface that is accessible from both a desktop and mobile device like my Blackberry Browser.
GTD with your Blackberry
World's Easiest & Free Blackberry GTD Solution
One of the reasons I like GTD is because I can be rather lazy. I hate doing something twice and I really hate forgetting to do something when it was right there in front on me. GTD helps me with this and since I always have my Blackberry handy, the laziness errr principle of GTD says that this might be the best solution for me.
Now I have read all sorts of reviews on Blackberry GTD software and the limitations of the basic Blackberry Task manager. But since this is the only device I use I sought a better implementation and here is my Blackberry GTD solution. Which for me is as near perfect as I could ever wish for. Why? Because my Blackberry GTD implementation is Free, has a single entry /input field and is lightning fast to use. Assuming that you already know the concept of GTD and have the general system down, here is how it works:
Just 2 Simple Steps (the rest are just helpful ideas)
Importing Contacts into an iPod Address Book
Well I just celebrated my 9th anniversary and since the two of us are rather hard to buy gifts for we simply picked out our own presents this year. Not too romantic but I got exactly what I wanted and she did too!
Besides some other things less techie, she got her first iPod. A nano with 4gb of storage. Now I am not a huge music listener. Sure I like dancing, driving to tunes and even right now as I type this I am watching Austin City Limits on PBS - The Raconteurs performing. But it wasn't until the iPod arrived and I starting setting it up for her that I realized this little tool could become "exactly" what she had been looking for, or rather what I had been wanting her to get... a PIM (personal info manager). I have always used my cellphone device (currently a Blackberry 7130) for contacts, addresses and calendars.
Blackberry Instant Messaging
Blackberry Instant Messaging
BlackBerry now supports the following instant messaging platforms:
- Yahoo!® Messenger
- IBM® Lotus® Sametime®
- Novell® GroupWise® Messenger
- Windows® Messenger / Live Communications Server 2005
- Google Talk™ for BlackBerry Devices
This is great news because I have access to IM lists typically only available on my desktop client. Faster than a Blackberry email and in certain cases better than a phone call. It is perfect for getting information via IM while already on a phone call.
Traveling with technology - the smarter way to fly
Here are all of my favorite Mobile Websites .
I have been looking into a way to check flight status from my cell phone with a text message or SMS. I thought about Google since it already has a pretty good mobile search function. But after a few tests I realized that it would not give me the results I needed. Then I found a really cool tool for finding flight status on your cell phone. It's called 4INFO. I know that they provide mobile searches just like Google but what makes them better for flight status alerts is the fast, easy and simple search strings.
Google Notebook and why can't I do EVERYTHING in one place?
Google does have a great little notebook and it wants to share it with everyone.... along with its gmail, spreadsheets, maps, calendars and everything else. The problem, and personally its a huge problem is that while 'everyone' and do everything on Google no one person can do everything in one place.
Sync Google's Calendar with a Java device
Now you can sync Google's CL2 Calendar with your cellphone! gCalSync has a Jar file that you can either import via USB/Bluetooth or visit http://wap.gcalsync.com with your phone's browser to install.
Google Analytics loves the new Firefox browser sync tool
Google's blog just announced a new Firefox sync extension that "unifies your bookmarks, history, saved passwords, and persistent cookies across all the computers where you install it. It also remembers which tabs and windows you had open when you last closed any of your browsers and gives you a chance to reopen them."
"Persistent Cookies"... so Google has created a tool to make our lives easier while at the same time allowing any website with Google Analytics to track continued visitors. Now if a visitor was hitting a site at work and then made the purchase that evening when they got home, Google Analytics will track them. Not to mention that now your cookie is attached to a Google account ID so this gives Google additional ability to track users across multiple sites.
RSS feeds for Movie Theater Showtimes
I saw 3 new movies this past weekend; The Break Up, MI:III, X-Men III. While I did enjoy the shows this is not a review post. Its a post on why I can't find RSS feeds for any of my local theaters.
