Microsoft Abandons Internet Explorer 8 Development for Firefox 3
Well... not yet. It spun out as a humor piece late last night and built rather quickly. Even I was excited, but delayed the mass email until I knew it for sure. There are two stories here though - 1) that the internet is a powerful distribution tool and 2) that Firefox (now on v3.0) is going to be the force that breaks down the 'fame' of IE. So let's just imagine...
Wouldn't it be great to get Firefox as the default. Kind of humorous when you look back at Mozilla's earlier roots as the Mosaic Killer (Mo+zilla). Firefox release 1.0 was Nov 2004. Not only has it now out lived Mosaic (which was licensed by MS), but now owns about 20% of the browser market. The list of features found in tomorrow's release of Firefox 3.0 is very impressive. I have been using it on my Ubuntu desktop for the last month and I love it. I believe that the biggest issue facing MS Internet Explorer is that being a closed system prevents the customized feel that I get from Firefox. I can choose to bloat FF with the addons that "I" want and nothing else.
When IE 4.0 was released, someone decided to leave the big E logo in the lawn of the Mozilla office. It seems that the Mozilla monster is rather territorial.

What I can't wait to see is all of the comments by new Firefox 3.0 users as the market share increases. Can you imagine all of the millions of people that actually think IE is the best way to surf the net? I can't wait to hear them talk and try to impress us long time FF users. As if we didn't already know?
It seems that Brian Biggs on BBSpot was author of the fictional story. Ashish from Techno Spot also writes about the news. Current market share of Internet Browsers.
