Stupid Luser or Bad IT?

I just read a pretty good article discussing how IT professionals tend to blame Lusers ('lousy users') rather than face up to badly written software and poor implementation. The article does a great job comparing the IT world to other businesses involved with development:

Consider a common problem: inconsistent and confusing interfaces. What if other businesses placed the blame for inconsistent interfaces on their customers? What if, for example, some Ford cars had the brake pedal on the right, and the gas pedal on the left, the exact opposite of how it’s done today? Worse still, what if the pedals changed functions while you were driving? Would automakers say: “Look, we explained the way the pedals worked in the owner’s manual. And whenever the pedals are about to change functions, you can feel a tug in the transmission – it’s unmistakable. Anyone who knows anything about cars can figure it out. We can’t help the fact that drivers are too stupid to get it.”

I love the timing of a story about Bad IT development... right when Apple (minus the Computer) Inc. introduces the iPhone. A device that after just 2 years of development out performs Palm, RIM, Sony, Microsoft and many others in terms of features, usability and innovation. So when others are claiming stupid 'lusers' for badly designed products, Apple comes out and proves them all wrong. Design the right device and everyone is happy.
