Tracking airport passengers with RFID
Airport travellers may be given RFID braclets rather than boarding passes to increase airport security.
This technology improvement would use embedded RFID tags into wrist bands or boarding passes to allow authorities to track passenger movement around terminal buildings. The technology could be linked with a record of the flyer which could include photos or other bio-unique data.
Scientists at University College London (UCL) are developing the system. It will radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and high-definition CCTV cameras to track passenger movements in airports.
Up to 5% of aircraft departure delays are caused by late passengers or late bags at the gate. So the cost of this security feature could easily be paid by the time and cost of air traffic delays.
