Google Calendar Arrives!

Well it took months of patient waiting but now Googles calendar
(CL2) is here! I hope that after trying it out that it was worth the
wait.

Google's calendar includes use of the new AJAX web language, making
the calendar much faster and easier to use that previous offers from
the likes of Yahoo and others. This speed is really noticed when adding
quick events to the main calendar page. Simple clicking on the event
day produces a nice brief AJAX box were info can be filled into the
quick fields.

I do like the multi-calendar approach of Google so far, but I am
surprised that there are no "Labels" like in gmail. This was a GREAT
idea that avoids duplicate entries and is basically just a form of
'tagging'. You can have numerous Calendars, all viewable from one
interface, but there is no way to put one event into multiple
Calendars. This limitation will make the shared Calendar feature, one
that I had high hopes for, drastically more difficult.

A little more about Shared Calendars

Please keep in mind that if you create a public gCal then it is just
that, PUBLIC. And yes public means that everyone can see every entry
into a public calendar

So what exactly is CL2 sharing? Well CL2 give you 2 options to share
your individual calendars. When you create a new calendar within CL2
you can give specific gmail users access to various calendar
permissions. You could also make this calendar "Public", but keep in
mind that public is for everyone.

Now there is also a twist... Public calendars can have private
entries and like-wise Private calendars (with or without shared users)
can have public entries. This 'kind-of' gives it the labeling affect I
mentioned earlier but stops very short since it is either On or Off
(public or private) and not really for organizational purposes.

I am disappointed that the calendar is not yet integrated into
gmail, but I hope that this is a feature that should be coming soon.
However, there has still been an overall lack of Google service
intergration as pointed out by numerous writers. The Google Accounts
link is available in some services but not others (gmail is missing
it), and the login to gmail is by gmail ID but other Google programs
use your email address (which normally is the gmail account).

Now I know that some would argue that gmail is email and the others
are services, but it would seem to me that tighter integration of all
Google services is to the best of their own interests. So why can't I
see a link to even gmail from even the 'Personaized Home' page?
